After 'Yuvvraaj' fiasco, Subhash Ghai turns to comedy

''Paying Guest' is an out-and-out comedy based on a play of the same name and directed by Paritosh Painter. It ran for two years in the US, UK and UAE. Now the movie too is being directed by the director of the play,' Ghai told IANS in an e-mail interview.
'Paritosh has done an equally good job as the director of the film. It will sure be a blockbuster, something I can predict at this moment,' the filmmaker said.
The multi-starrer revolves around five close friends who stay together in Dubai and is set to hit screens next month.
'In a comedy film like this, you really need genuinely talented actors rather than only a star who has a sale value. So we decided on Shreyas (Talpade), Javed Jaffery, Ashish Chowdhary, Celina (Jaitley), Neha Dhupia and so on,' he said.
So does he feel comedy is the flavour of the season?
'I completely feel that comedy is the flavour of the season. Today stress levels are so high that people like comedy, even mindless comedies if it's entertaining,' said Ghai.
'Nowadays, people don't have time to appreciate your poetry or cinema unless you compel them to go and watch it, but that's a tough proposition for a filmmaker today,' he added.
Ghai, whose production house Mukta Arts Pvt Ltd has produced successful films like 'Aitraaz' and 'Iqbal' among others, says his banner believes in churning out films of all budgets and genres.
'My company is a major movie production company in Mumbai for which I direct one film and we produce three to four films a year with various directors and all kinds of budgets and genres.
'For example, we produced 'Aitraaz', '36 China Town' and 'Yuvvraaj' with big budgets and 'Iqbal, 'Apna Sapna Money Money' and 'Black and White' as small budget movies,' said Ghai.
The director-producer has himself directed hugely popular films like 'Karz', 'Hero', 'Karma', 'Saudagar', 'Pardes' and 'Taal'.
Ghai has planned five more productions this year including 'Right Yaa Wrong', 'Hello Darling' and three new projects to be launched soon.
Asked about the ongoing tussle between the producers and multiplexes over sharing of revenue, Ghai said the root of the problem is that both the sides are not considering the other's grievances.
'It's a tussle of business interests. Both are right with their grievances but not ready to consider the other's point of view. I think producers asking for 50 percent, 40 percent and 35 percent in first three weeks respectively is a fair demand whereas in the fourth week it should be re-negotiable as per the merit of the film.

Six persons test negative for swine flu in Delhi

New Delhi Six persons, who had arrived in New Delhi from abroad in the last few days and were suspected to be suffering from swine flu, have tested negative for the virus while one person is under observation. 

All the seven persons were tested for H1N1 virus after they showed flu-like symptoms. 

The samples were sent to National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) for testing. Six of the samples have tested negative, said Director NICD Shivlal. 

"The samples were put through a rapid test for ‘influenza A’ virus for which they tested negative. Further tests for H1N1 flu were not required as only ‘influenza A’ virus can lead to swine flu," he said. 

While six samples were sent from the Ram Manohar Lohia hospital, one was that of a person from Hyderabad who had reported symptoms last week. 

Five persons were discharged from the hospital while a London-based NRI is still admitted to the RML as his test results have not come yet. 

Five persons were brought to RML in the past 24 hours while one person from Ghaziabad, who has recently returned from Texas, voluntarily came to the hospital after he saw media coverage of the flu. 

While the 35-year-old London-based NRI was brought to hospital directly from the Indira Gandhi International Airport this morning, the 25-year-old who came from Texas got himself admitted to the RML last evening. 

"Both of them are under observation in isolation ward. We have done all tests and samples have been sent to NICD," N K Chaturvedi, Medical Superintendent of RML, told reporters. 

The London-based NRI, who hails from Delhi, developed flu symptoms during his flight to the capital from London and was referred to the hospital after a screening at the airport. 

"He has a running nose, sore throat and cold but has no fever. He will be kept under observation for the next three days," Chaturvedi said. 

The Texas-based youth, who landed in Delhi on April 19 and had fever for two days on April 24, turned up at the hospital last evening, Chaturvedi said adding the man, who hails from adjoining Ghaziabad, later became asymptomatic. 

Vineet Chaudhary, Joint Secretary in Health Ministry, said there was no case of H1N1 flu in the country and all precautions have been taken. 

Chaturvedi said two others were brought to the hospital suspecting that they could be carriers of flu but it later turned out that they have liver problems. He said RML is fully equipped to handle cases of H1N1 flu.

Now any journalist, budding actor or producer who has ever tried to get an interview or appointment with Sallu bhai knows how difficult it is, but for the sexy Claudia it was just cake walk or should we say ramp walk for Sallu went out of his way to extend the red carpet to the doe-eyed beauty.

According to Wikipedia and her own website, Claudia Ciesla (not Claudia Schiffer please) is a German model, actress, and singer of Polish descent. She grew up in the town of Bukow, Poland. Her father is Polish and her mother is German.

Ciesla started modeling at the age of 15 working for shows involved in fashion and dancing. At the age of 17 she moved to Bamberg, Germany and became an Internet glamour model. Her original stage name is "CClaudia", but she also appears frequently under her real name. She then appeared in print in the German Matador magazine. 

She was discovered by the former German Chief Editor, Stefan Gessulat, and appeared in the August 2005 Matador issue as Miss Matador. She has done many glamorous bikini and fashion modeling shoots and her photos have been published on many Internet websites. 

The Wiki entry also goes to add that the German newspaper Bild arranged an examination of Ciesla by a plastic surgeon and reported that her breasts (38DD) were entirely natural.

Claudia shot for the German-Indian Film "Ki Jana Pardes" in 2008. In Aug/Sept Claudia shot in Kolkatta playing the role of a German journalist for the Film "10:10" together with award winning filmstar Soumitra Chatterjee and sang the title song of this movie. 

Claudia and her Business Manager – the affable and very lovable Greg - were in Mumbai last week to dub for her second Hindi movie titled Karma. She also interacted with media persons and posed for photographs, but refused to comment on her meeting with Salman Khan.

`Youth-centric reality shows don`t represent youth`

New Delhi, May 04: Using `F` words, pulling each other`s hair on trivial issues and manipulative moves that we see on youth-centric reality shows like `Splitsvilla`, `Sarkaar Ki Duniya` and `MTV Roadies` do not give the real picture of the country`s youth, say psychiatrists and a majority of youngsters too.

Whether it is the foul language used by female contestant Palak in `Roadies 6.0` or the many manipulations in the name of love by participants on `Splitsvilla 2`, the games today go meaner with no limits. 

But leading psychiatrist Sanjay Chugh says it`s not right to judge the country`s youth through a few shows on television. The real picture is different. 

"To generalise how youth of our country is by viewing a handful of shows for a few months and that too in a conditioned setting is rather unfair and unwarranted," Chugh told reporters. 

"There is a specified age range for people to enter such contests. If that age criterion is changed to only for those from 30-40 years, you`d perhaps see people from that spectrum too behaving in similar ways that are described as aggressive, conniving or devious," he added. 

Nauman Sait, the winner of `MTV Roadies 6.0`, too feels that being in a reality show tests your mental strength. 

"Such games are mentally challenging. You have to adapt to different situations where people who are your friends are also the ones against you and still you have to try to look happy. It becomes very difficult to know who is genuine because most people fake on such shows," Nauman told reporters. 

Samir Parikh, consultant psychiatrist at Max Healthcare in New Delhi, agreed that people`s behaviour had changed over time, but not to the extent as shown on such shows. 

"I agree perceptions, thinking and behaviour of the new generation has changed, but I don`t agree that reality shows mirror youth of today. Just because a few people are behaving in a particular manner doesn`t mean that the entire generation is the same," he maintained. 

The youth-centric shows, which have become a rage, are based on the basic premise of testing people in extreme challenging situations and seeing who can survive till the end. Experts say this is the main factor that compels people to behave in the way they do. 

"These shows demand and expect you to have great mental strength, tolerance and the right attitude to make your way up when everyone is trying to pull you down. Manipulations and aggression are just strategies and game plans that people work out in their minds in order to save themselves from being voted out," said Chugh. 

Said Parikh: "There is maximum arousal in such shows. You are cut away from the world, you are subjected to do the same thing. There is social deprivation, isolation, high competitiveness and then situations are such that one tends to behave in a manner different from normal circumstances." 

Youngsters too feel that their generation doesn`t endorse stepping on others to move ahead and using swear words without any reason. 

Ravisha Jain, a 19-year-old college student here, is a regular viewer of `Splitsvilla` on MTV and `Sarkaar Ki Duniya` on Real, but she maintains that what the shows depict are not the views of every youngster today. 

"I`m a young girl too, but I won`t use foul language so openly and indulge in manipulations to go ahead in life. It`s true that there are boys and girls who resort to such tactics, but it would be wrong to say this is the taste of young India," Ravisha said. 

"It is a pity that young, educated people are behaving like this on national television - youth today signifies strength and progress and the behaviour of girls and boys on such shows is not acceptable, whatever may be the reason," said Shantanu Sinha, who works with a BPO.

“So far I’ve never had fun on the sets. All the character I’ve played have been introverted and troubled. So I’ve been in my shell. During Fashion Madhur Bhandarkar used to scold me for being in a shell all the time. But if I play insecure paranoid characters I can’t be laughing and playing around. But it was the nature of the characters. For Anees Bazmi’s film I’m changing completely. I’m going to organize parties on the sets, constantly crack Santa-Banta jokes and most important of all, I will bond with Sushmita. Hopefully our bonding will last beyond one film.” After signing a film together, Sushmita Sen has taken the lovely Kangna Ranaut under her wings. Always known to be warm towards her co-stars Sushmita has taken a special fancy to Kangana because of her facial resemblance to Sushmita’s daughter Renee. Says Kangna, “On the first day that we met we struck a special chord in each other’s hearts. I was standing at a premiere and she came up to me. She held my face in her hands and said I’ve hair exactly like her daughter. And that whenever she saw me she was reminded of her daughter. From that moment onwards we bonded. Luckily I play Sushmita’s sister in the film that we’re doing together. I love calling her Didi.” Kangna is pleased as hell to be finally doing comedy. “I was really hurt when people said I was destined only to play tragic roles. I wanted to do comedy for the longest time. And that I’ve Sushmita playing my sister in the film is an added bonus. We’ll have a ball playing sisters.” The film is Anees Bazmi’s comedy No Problem produced by Anil Kapoor. Says Kangna, “I had decided whenever I do my first comedy it would have to be either with Anees Bazmi or David Dhawan. Everyone thought I was wrong for the part in No Problem. No one was convinced I could do comedy, not after playing all those traumatized roles. But Anilji convinced everyone that I could do it.”

Strongly refuting the lately-perpetrated speculation on his return to politics Amitabh Bachchan says, "I'm not into politics at all of any kind. There's absolutely no question of my going into politics. I've repeatedly said I don't understand politics, nor do I have any wish to get into it in any capacity. Let me say once and for all I'm not going to get into it . I don't make any political statements. Nor am I on any political platform. I'm not qualified to understand or participate in any of our politics."
But then what about Amar Singh's statement to the effect that the Big B might be asked to stand elections? "Ask him why he said what he said. Why are you asking me?" reasons the Big B calmly.
The Big B admits that perhaps his close association with politicians who are his friends, often leads to the belief that he is going the political way. "I agree I've many friends who are heavily into politics and affiliated to many different parties. But I do not follow any of their political ideology. You are also my friend. Does it mean I might take to journalism? Or would it be right to presume that you'd become an actor just because you know me so well?"
While the speculation on Tuesday ran rife after a close family- friend Amar Singh alluded to the Big B's return to politics, the actor was busy shooting a music video for his forthcoming release Baabul. "The video is woven around my song Kehta hai babul. I think they'll use my song only in the credit titles and the end titles�or maybe a portion in the background."
About the controversy surrounding Abhishek receiving the Yash Bharti award in Lucknow , the Big B responds, "Achcha hai. There should be debate and questioning in any free society. We're a democratic country and everyone is entitled to an opinion."

SMS reveals the climax of Ghajini

Just when the audiences started queuing up for booking their tickets for Aamir Khan-starrer Ghajini, a chain SMS started playing spoilsport by revealing what could possibly be the climax of the film.
“Someone killed Aamir’s girlfriend and he lost his memory. Then he tries to find out the killer. Suspens… Aamir himself is the killer. Now enjoy Ghajini!” says the SMS that has been doing the rounds on the mobile phones for the past few days.
Whether the SMS is true would only be clear once the film releases on Thursday. However, several people have received this SMS through known as well as unknown sources.
Says 22-year-old Surbhi Pant: “I received this SMS a few days back. I was very irritated after reading it because I wanted to watch the film. Now I don’t know if it is true or not. Just in case this is the story of the film, I would be really disappointed, as I know the plot now. Eventually, I thought I should forward it to all my friends.”

Yash Chopra receives FIAPF Award, presented at 2008 Asia Pacific Screen Awards

Mr .Yash Chopra, founder of Yash Raj Films, has been awarded the FIAPF Award for his outstanding achievement as a filmmaker at the annual Asia Pacific Screen Awards.

The Awards were presented on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, on November 11, 2008, with more than 700 film industry luminaries from the Asia-Pacific region, Europe and the United States attending the ceremony.

The FIAPF Award is determined by FIAPF, the International Federation of Film Producers Associations, and awarded to an individual for outstanding achievement in films in the Asia-Pacific region.

In presenting the Award, President of FIAP, Mr Andrés Vincente Gomez, described Mr. Chopra as "a legend in Hindi cinema who has played a seminal role in making Indian films more popular the world over."

"Mr Chopra has also played a pioneering role in modernising the local industry and putting it on a more contemporary corporate footing," Mr Gomez continued.

Last year's inaugural FIAPF Award was presented to Australian producer and director George Miller.

The Asia Pacific Screen Awards is collaboration between CNN International, UNESCO and FIAPF - International Federation of Film Producers Associations and is an international cultural initiative of the Queensland Government, Australia, to acclaim films that best reflect their cultural origins and demonstrate cinematic excellence.

Commenting on the award, Mr. Chopra said, "It is a great honour to receive this award endorsed as it is by such respected names as CNN International, UNESCO and FIAPF. Our films have always shown a strong commitment to family values and have been rooted in Indian culture and I believe that this award is a recognition of that fact. 'Ghajini' will cross 'Singh Is Kinng'

Post the success of Fashion, Bhandarkars visit Vaishno Devi

With Fashion resulting in mega bucks at the end of an extended first week and marching on a positive note in the second weekend too, Madhur Bhandarkar is finally relaxing. After a year of non-stop working on the film, schedule hassles, early release of the film, competition with Golmaal Returns and sleepless nights, Madhur Bhandarkar finally saw his labor of love, Fashion, turning out to be the biggest money spinner of his career so far. In fact, the first week collections of Fashion are higher than total collections of his biggest earner till date, Corporate, which pretty much tells the tale.

Now before starting work on his next project, he decided to visit 'Mata Ka Darbar' in Vaishno Devi. "I am thankful to God. He has always been kind to me. Ab itna to banta hai ki picture ki success ke baad main darshan ke liye zaroor jaaon (Now after the film's success, the least I can do is to go and take God's blessings)", said Madhur Bhandarkar before heading for Vaishno Devi yesterday. His wife Renu too accompanied him for Vaishno Devi.

Before leaving for Vaishno Devi, Madhur Bhandarkar also made it a point to host the success party of Fashion in New Delhi on Saturday night. The party wasn't meant to be yet another filmy affair but was attended by the usual Page 3 attendees of the Delhi party circle. Madhur was accompanied by wife Renu who acted as a perfect host while filmmaker Ashok Pandit too accompanied him for the event.

"Once I come back to Mumbai, it would be business as usual. I have to now see how far Fashion goes from here. The film has done excellently well in its first week and I am closely watching second week collections now. Since it has been produced by me as well (along with UTV), it is quite special. Exhibitors have kept their faith in the project by retaining a very good number of shows in the second week as well. Although a few people thought that length of the film was an issue, that didn't seem to be a problem with audience or exhibitors. I am glad the film has been accepted the way I had envisaged", signs off Madhur.

In case you didn't know, Katrina Kaif is very accident prone. A month ago, Ranbir Kapoor missed his cue and slapped Katrina Kaif so hard on the sets of Rajkumar Santoshi's Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahani, her face ballooned and shooting had to be cancelled.

Last week, Katrina got her leg rather badly injured at Film City in Mumbai while shooting for Priyadarshan's De Dhana Dhan.

According to members of the cast, Katrina was doing an underwater sequence with Akshay Kumar when her foot got tangled under water.

Says a source, "The more she tried to extricate herself, the more her leg got tangled. She tried to scream for help. But because of the noise on the sets including that of the stunt co-ordinators who were shouting instructions to the entire cast, no one heard Katrina's screams of pain."

Finally it was up to the film's leading man Akshay Kumar to do the needful. Says the source, "Akshay saw Katrina was in trouble. He quickly swam to her and got her out of the tangle."

Katrina's leg was bruised and bloodied. Panic prevailed on Priyan's sets for a while until medicos arrived and took care of Katrina's wounded leg. "It could've been worse," shudders the source, "But tetanus shots and sedatives have eased her pain."

When contacted, Katrina tried to downplay the incident. "It was nothing. I hurt my leg. Nothing serious at all. There was a cut that hasn't healed as yet. So I'm in a lot of pain."
