Proyanka Chopra

Onir has a bold story to tell

Director Onir believes in taking the unconventional route. Right from his directorial debut MY BROTHER NIKHIL to BAS EK PAL to his new outing SORRY BHAI [Shabana Azmi, Boman Irani, Sanjay Suri, Sharman Joshi, Chitrangda], Onir has always opted for stories that defy the stereotype. SORRY BHAI has a bold story to tell as well and Onir narrates it with utmost sensitivity.

When you've powerful names in the cast, expecting power-packed performances becomes mandatory. No wonder, SORRY BHAI boasts of superior performances, but the one who steals the show is Sharman Joshi, who's getting better and better with every film. He depicts the turmoil with such precision that it stays with you even after you've left the auditorium.

SORRY BHAI charters a new path as far as its story is concerned and it would be interesting to see how the viewers of today take to this tale.

Sushmita Sen clears rumours about her not turning up for an ad shoot

By Subhash K. Jha, November 10, 2008 - 11:44 IST

Sushmita won't allow anyone to spoil her fun. "What do I do with false stories about me? Let them spoil my day? No way! I leave the rumour mongers to deal with their own conscience."

Ever since a report appeared in the press that Sushmita ditched a shoot for a shampoo, she has been doubling up with laughter. "That's how well the media knows me," says Sushmita with slight sarcasm. "I'd never default on my work. And party while work waited? This is too outrageous to be funny."

The fact is Sushmita no longer endorses the product she's supposed to have ditched. "I had no contractual obligation. My contract with the product ended in July. In fact, the last shooting for the product took place in July."

There's no hint of exasperation in Sushmita's voice. "I couldn't allow my life to be spoilt by such absurd reports. First they say I couldn't attend the shoot for the ad because I was partying the previous night. Then they say the people who were supposed to shoot the ad kept trying to reach me. Anyone who knows me would know I never switch off my cell. And why would they try to get in touch with me? Wouldn't getting to me via my manager be much easier? The best part is I don't endorse that product any longer. My deal with them ended long back. So which Sushmita Sen were they supposed to be waiting for? But then this is small compared with marriage plans that are made for me every month."

Our films have always shown a strong commitment to family values and have been rooted in Indian culture and I believe that this award is a recognition of that fact. In addition, we have over the last few years developed a strong relationship with the beautiful country of Australia and that makes this award even sweeter. Finally, I believe the award recognizes that our films have touched hearts in countries across the Asia-Pacific region, even while maintaining high levels of cinematic excellence, and that gives me - and all of us at Yash Raj Films - deep satisfaction and joy."

Ajay, Kajol lend their support for a social cause related to senior citizens

By Bollywood Hungama News Network, November 10, 2008 - 17:39 IST

Ajay Devgan and Kajol were last seen together on screen in U, Me Aur Hum. During the film's release, the couple was seen on several T.V. shows, magazine covers and events promoting their film. However, now the duo decided to come together once again not for any film or product endorsement but to promote a social cause.

Ajay and Kajol were in the capital yesterday (Nov 9) to flag off the Senior Citizens Run for a social initiative lead by Tina Ambani called 'Harmony'. The initiative focuses on the cause of promoting the community interest of senior citizens.

Well, the couple have always impressed us with their on-screen and off-screen chemistry, but this time round they've won our hearts too with this touching gesture.

Post the success of Fashion, Bhandarkars visit Vaishno Devi

By Joginder Tuteja, November 10, 2008 - 16:24 IST

With Fashion resulting in mega bucks at the end of an extended first week and marching on a positive note in the second weekend too, Madhur Bhandarkar is finally relaxing. After a year of non-stop working on the film, schedule hassles, early release of the film, competition with Golmaal Returns and sleepless nights, Madhur Bhandarkar finally saw his labor of love, Fashion, turning out to be the biggest money spinner of his career so far. In fact, the first week collections of Fashion are higher than total collections of his biggest earner till date, Corporate, which pretty much tells the tale.

Now before starting work on his next project, he decided to visit 'Mata Ka Darbar' in Vaishno Devi. "I am thankful to God. He has always been kind to me. Ab itna to banta hai ki picture ki success ke baad main darshan ke liye zaroor jaaon (Now after the film's success, the least I can do is to go and take God's blessings)", said Madhur Bhandarkar before heading for Vaishno Devi yesterday. His wife Renu too accompanied him for Vaishno Devi.

Before leaving for Vaishno Devi, Madhur Bhandarkar also made it a point to host the success party of Fashion in New Delhi on Saturday night. The party wasn't meant to be yet another filmy affair but was attended by the usual Page 3 attendees of the Delhi party circle. Madhur was accompanied by wife Renu who acted as a perfect host while filmmaker Ashok Pandit too accompanied him for the event.

"Once I come back to Mumbai, it would be business as usual. I have to now see how far Fashion goes from here. The film has done excellently well in its first week and I am closely watching second week collections now. Since it has been produced by me as well (along with UTV), it is quite special. Exhibitors have kept their faith in the project by retaining a very good number of shows in the second week as well. Although a few people thought that length of the film was an issue, that didn't seem to be a problem with audience or exhibitors. I am glad the film has been accepted the way I had envisaged", signs off Madhur.

Abhishek Bachchan, Himesh Reshammiya and Mallika Sherwat in RGV's Rann?

By Devansh Patel, November 10, 2008 - 11:24 IST

In journalism, there has always been a tension of getting it first. But what matters is getting it right. It's been ten days since we first brought to you the breaking news of the starcast in RGV's Rann, and just as RGV always plans to release one film every month, we have decided to bring to you one news every week from his latest offering. RGV already has a mega line up of stars for this film which includes Amitabh Bachchan, Paresh Rawal, Riteish Deshmukh, Mohnish Behl, Manisha Koirala, Rajat Kapoor, Sudeep, Gul Panag, Raima Sen and Rajpal Yadav. Now, some of the media buffs have already started speculating that Rann has got another actor in the long line-up of the film. Don't be surprised! Be cautious! Coz it's none other than Himesh Reshammiya. Yes, a little birdie tells us that Himesh had gone to meet RGV at his Oshiwara office after hearing that Rann is his next biggie in the making. So what does RGV tell him? Well, again the grapevine hears that the director par excellence told him 'No'. But on the flip side RGV was very impressed with Himesh's enthusiasm and so is now trying to work things out if there is any role for the actor which can be sketched out in his film.

We also hear the gossip mills talking about Rann's hidden treasure. It comes in the form of Mallika Sherawat. However, what role she has got to play in the film is something which only RGV will be able to tell us. In the meantime, another Bollywood biggie is also said to have been roped in for this mammoth project. Like father, like son, Abhishek Bachchan. For all you Sarkar and Sarkar Raj fans, you need not worry now. Both the Bachchans are back but only time will tell whether they both share the limelight again in what is said to be Ram Gopal Varma's biggest directorial film - Rann.

Aamir Khan's innovative way to interact with the media for Ghajini

By Bollywood Hungama News Network, November 8, 2008 - 15:42 IST

Be it 30 secs commercial or a 3 hour long film, when Aamir Khan does it, he does it differently. This superstar deserves accolades for not just being a talented actor but also a very intelligent marketing personnel when it comes to promoting his films. Just last year we saw how Aamir grabbed everyone's attention with his directorial venture Taare Zameen Par, which had a young kid (Darsheel Safary) as the lead actor and a subject which was never dealt before in Bollywood. Yes, the film did star Aamir but it was also his smart marketing plan that managed to get the film, the great opening and rest is history. Ditto for one of this year's biggest hits Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na, which had a complete new cast and crew, but the film created new records and thus made Imran Khan an over night star. One can't deny that the aggressive marketing done by Aamir did the trick.

And now, for his next film, Ghajini, Aamir has (yet again) devised a very smart and creative plan to interact with the media. As we know by now, Aamir has been enjoying blogging on his personal website and has been keeping his fans updated on every new development on his film projects. But now, the 'perfectionist' Khan will be creatively using the internet medium to interact with the media persons. 'Creatively' because the interaction will be based on the theme of Ghajini.

It goes like this. Every media person will be asked to upload their photograph on the website www.rememberghajini.com/media especially designed for Aamir to readily access their photograph. This will help Aamir recall everything about the journalist in a jiffy including their name and other details. Aamir will also write down a personal note that will be part of the journalists' profile. According to Aamir, this would be an interesting exercise since it goes with the theme of my film, Ghajini.

More importantly, even though one has over a period of time, interacted with several media persons, one hardly gets to share anything that is even remotely personal. However, Aamir's new website will do exactly that- establish a personal connect between the actor and journalists. Today (November 8), Aamir will access the website created for this purpose and will be making special notes for all the media persons after going through all the photographs. Aamir's personal note on the photographs will be based on one lasting memory that the actor has of that particular journalist. Along with the personal note, Aamir will also present an information kit of, Ghajini, to each journalist who registers on the website www.rememberghajini.com/media.

Now it can be understood that the idea for this innovative concept comes from Aamir's character in Ghajini, who suffers from a short term memory loss. Must say, Aamir's unique way of media interaction has surely impressed us.

Katrina injured on the sets of De Dhana Dhan at Film City

In case you didn't know, Katrina Kaif is very accident prone. A month ago, Ranbir Kapoor missed his cue and slapped Katrina Kaif so hard on the sets of Rajkumar Santoshi's Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahani, her face ballooned and shooting had to be cancelled.

Last week, Katrina got her leg rather badly injured at Film City in Mumbai while shooting for Priyadarshan's De Dhana Dhan.

According to members of the cast, Katrina was doing an underwater sequence with Akshay Kumar when her foot got tangled under water.

Says a source, "The more she tried to extricate herself, the more her leg got tangled. She tried to scream for help. But because of the noise on the sets including that of the stunt co-ordinators who were shouting instructions to the entire cast, no one heard Katrina's screams of pain."

Finally it was up to the film's leading man Akshay Kumar to do the needful. Says the source, "Akshay saw Katrina was in trouble. He quickly swam to her and got her out of the tangle."

Katrina's leg was bruised and bloodied. Panic prevailed on Priyan's sets for a while until medicos arrived and took care of Katrina's wounded leg. "It could've been worse," shudders the source, "But tetanus shots and sedatives have eased her pain."

When contacted, Katrina tried to downplay the incident. "It was nothing. I hurt my leg. Nothing serious at all. There was a cut that hasn't healed as yet. So I'm in a lot of pain."

"Saif will be out of hospital in a couple of days" - Kareena Kapoor

By Subhash K. Jha, December 26, 2008 - 12:03 IST

Saif Ali Khan was back in hospital for the third time in less than three years. The first time it happened in Kuala Lumpur in March 2006 when Saif had to undergo an emergency appendectomy.

The second and far more serious health scare occurred in February 2007 when Saif was rushed to Lilavati hospital in Mumbai for a suspected heart attack.

All was well after that, with Saif leading a healthy and balanced professional and personal life.

However, on Thursday he was back in the hospital for a suspected food poisoning. Said his girlfriend Kareena Kapoor, "He is all right. He got a stomach infection due to some thing he ate that didn't suit him. He'll be discharged from hospital in 2-3 days."

Adds Saif's mom Sharmila Tagore, "He ate bhelpuri that caused a problem. He's in some discomfort. Otherwise he's okay."

Incidentally, Saif and Kareena were supposed to leave for their week-long New Year vacation after Christmas. At the moment it stands postponed.

Is Victory based on M.S. Dhoni's real life success story?

By Bollywood Hungama News Network, December 26, 2008 - 17:43 IST

After his debut in Love Story 2050, Harman Baweja is all set to make a comeback with his latest Victory. The film, which is being directed by Ajitpal Mangat, is based on cricket and has some real big names from the cricketing world like Brett Lee, Simon Katich, Harbhajan Singh, Sohail Tanvir, Graeme Smith, Chaminda Vaas and Muralitharan making an appearance.

Victory is about a small town boy, who like millions of others, dreams of making it big in the world of cricket and actually does go all the way. The buzz doing the rounds is that the film's story is inspired by the real life success story of India Captain M.S.Dhoni. It is well known fact that Dhoni, who is a household name today, was just another ordinary lad from Jharkhand with dreams in his eyes few years ago.

Bollywood Hungama decided to probe a little more into this and when we got in touch with a reliable source from Mr. Mangat's office, he said, "I cannot comment on this right now. You will have to wait for the right time till we are ready to disclose such information." If sources are to be believed the film also has references to the real life success stories of players like Yuvraj Singh and Virender Sehwag.

We tried getting in touch with Harman too but he was unavailable for comment. One will have to wait and watch if Victory is indeed based on the life M.S. Dhoni.

"I'm going to be fine tomorrow; the holiday with Kareena is on" - Saif

By Subhash K. Jha, December 26, 2008 - 18:29 IST

Saif Ali Khan gave all his family and friends a scare when he was hospitalized on Christmas Eve. But today (December 26), he is well on his way to recovery.

Speaking from his hospital bed at Mumbai's Lilavati hospital, Saif said, "I've almost recovered now. I'm going home tomorrow (Dec 27). It was nothing, really. I returned from Philadelphia from the shooting of Rensil D'Silva's film on 23rd night. And since I was missing all the Mumbai ka khana, I gorged indiscriminately on local junk food- Sev puri, bhelpuri, paani puri...puri ki puri fauj went into my stomach."

So wasn't he frightened when his stomach started acting up on him? "Not at all. It was gastroenteritis. Yes, I've been in hospital twice in the recent past. Once it was just appendicitis. And the other time it was far more serious. After going through what I did the last time I'm hardly going to get scared by a little stomach infection."

Chuckles Saif, "Actually it's much less scary than it looks. I've got a drip coming out of my hand, so that makes it look kind of serious. But it's nothing. I'm fine. Just a little sleepy. In fact, Kareena and I are going on our holiday to the mountains as planned."

Akshay-Kareena starrer Kambakht Ishq slated to release in May 2009

By Bollywood Hungama News Network, December 26, 2008 - 18:15 IST

Akshay Kumar ruled the B.O. last year (2007) with several back to back hits. This year, while his film Tashan, sank without a trace, Singh Is Kinng emerged as one of the biggest blockbusters of the year, thereby pronouncing him as the ‘Kinng’ of the Box-Office.

Now next year, Akki fans would get to see him in Sajid Nadiadwala's Kambakht Ishq, which many insiders believe would be the biggest film of 2009. The film has been slated to release on May 29, 2009. Kambakht Ishq has been in the news for a while now, especially because of the pairing of Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor. Among the highlights of the film is the presence of Hollywood heavyweights such as Sylvester Stallone, Brandon Routh and Denise Richards.

The film directed by debutante director Sabir Khan has been shot at some extravagant locations across Europe and the buzz among the industry experts and the aam janta towards the film has been quite phenomenal. Now with Kambakht Ishq been scheduled to release on May 29, expect things to get all the more hotter next summer.

"Jumbo has elements that Lion King had" - Lara Dutta

By Bollywood Hungama News Network, December 27, 2008 - 13:06 IST

This Christmas 'Every thing's gonna be alright', and that's exactly what the film Jumbo says. Bollywood Hungama caught up with the gorgeous Lara Dutta who has lent her voice to the melodious character of Sonia in the film. In a free-wheeling chat Lara talks about her experience dubbing for this animated flick.

For the first time you will be giving voiceover for an animated film in Bollywood. How did you think of this, all of a sudden?
Akshay is a very good friend... I remember it was when we were shooting an action sequence in Phuket for the film Blue that he offered me Jumbo. He told me that it is a very sweet film and he would love to have me play a part in it. I also felt it was a lovely film and immediately signed it. I have always been fond of watching animation films, so to be part of an animation film got me really excited.
I remember it was when we were shooting an action sequence in Phuket for the film Blue that Akshay offered me Jumbo

So you agreed to lend your voice for the film because of Akshay?
Yes... but then that is just one of the factors. Akshay and I have done many films. He is a fantastic co star and a dear friend. It is always my pleasure to work with him. However, like I said I was thrilled to be part of an animation film. And Jumbo is a very sweet film.

What is your character in the film? Do you think your voice suited the character?
The cute pink elephant is me (Smiles) I play Jumbo's love interest. Her name is Sonia. I was required to sound very melodious so I had to ensure that I got it right. It was fun and I have given my best. Hope the audience feels that my voice has suited the character.
I play Jumbo's love interest. Her name is Sonia. I was required to sound very melodious so I had to ensure that I got it right.

Which is more difficult? Acting or giving voice to an animated character?
Well, it is difficult to give voice to an animated character. But then, there are two sides to it. The difficult part is that since you haven't shot for it, you have to understand the emotions that the character is supposed to go through. That is a challenge. But on the positive side you can interpret it in many ways... it allows you to be creative. You don't need to talk in an exaggerated manner. You just have to understand the graph of your character and speak accordingly.

Jumbo is basically about family and its values, how much do you agree with this?
Yes... a lot. The film is high on family values. The story is about a baby elephant who longs for his father and how he leaves his herd and embarks upon a journey in search of his father. I was very touched with the storyline.

Which other animated films have you seen and liked the best?
I love Lion King... In fact Jumbo has elements that Lion King had.

Is the film targeting kids only?
No... It is for everyone. You are never too old for animation movies. Jumbo isn't a mindless film. It has a definite storyline and a moral to the story which the audience will like. But yes... I'm doing this film completely for my kiddie audience.

Apart from Jumbo... what else do you have in the pipeline?
There's Blue with Akshay Kumar and Sanjay Dutt, then there is Billu Barber with Irrfan Khan and Shahrukh

"SRK is a hero, he worked when the city was burning" - Viveck Vaswani

By Joginder Tuteja, December 27, 2008 - 13:43 IST

Producer Viveck Vaswani can never forget the support that he got from Shah Rukh Khan during the filming of the last leg of Dulha Mil Gaya schedule that concluded a few days back.

"Shah Rukh Khan is a true hero. He came to do a film for a friend when the city was burning. He had a huge release round the corner (Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi) and there were quite a few odds against the film's shoot; still he made it possible", says Viveck Vaswani in a choked tone as he looks forward to filming the last song in February that would make Dulha Mil Gaya ready for release.

"While Shah Rukh Khan stood like a pillar of support, what the entire unit of Dulha Mil Gaya did for me was also simply unimaginable", adds Viveck.

"Sunil Patel - the DoP and Leela Chanda - the Art Director are the real heroes of the Shah Rukh schedule", he reminisces, "They did not sleep for 3 weeks non-stop. They were busy creating a luxury liner, the Port of Spain airport. They were shooting stunts while coordinating helicopters in the climax. They were putting up and dismantling sets even as they were working tirelessly like soldiers. This was commendable in the times when the city was burning with no transport, no trains, no autorickshaws, no shops open, no workers."

"Add to all of this a producer called Viveck Vaswani with barely enough money who was caught in the worst recession time in the industry", he chuckles, "Moreover, the industry too wasn't too kind even as it scoffed at me by stating that Shah Rukh Khan was no more a part of the film; he had walked out etc. etc. Some wish list here!"
